This area is delimited as follows: beginning with the description of the boundary of the part of this area belonging to the province of Siena, the starting point is taken as the point where the boundary between the two provinces of Siena and Arezzo is crossed by the Borro Ambrella della Vena near Pancole in the municipality of Castelnuovo Berardenga. From this point, the boundary follows the Ambra stream and an unnamed tributary thereof as far as the Ciarpella farmstead, then the mule track leading to the Casa al Frate farmstead. From here, it follows a virtual line to the Ombrone (elevation 298). From there, following a mule track, it reaches an elevation of 257 metres, where it meets a cart track that leads onto the road to Castelnuovo Berardenga. It follows this road up to an elevation of 354 metres. From here, it follows the Malena Morta ditch to its confluence with the Borro Spugnaccio; then continues along the Malena Morta ditch to Pialli (elevation 227 metres). It then follows the Malena Viva ditch for a short stretch, before turning along a virtual line passing through S. Lucia (elevation 252 and 265) towards the Arbia. Upon reaching this stream, it follows it upstream along the administrative boundary between the municipalities of Siena and Castelnuovo Berardenga. From here, the boundary of the area continues to coincide with the administrative boundaries of Siena, Castelnuovo Berardenga, Castellina, Monteriggioni and Poggibonsi, until it meets, at the Borro di Granaio, the boundary of the province of Florence, which it follows as far as the Le Valli farmstead. It then follows the municipal road, passing through S. Giorgio and the springs of Cinciano, and continuing until it meets the provincial boundary once more, which is also the boundary between the municipalities of Poggibonsi and Barberino, then the Drove stream, entering the province of Florence. At this point, the description of the boundary of the part of this area belonging to the province of Florence begins. For its first section, this boundary follows the Drove stream to the Mulino della Chiara, where it meets the administrative boundary between the municipalities of Tavarnelle and Barberino, which it follows for a short stretch, before turning slightly eastwards along another small stream, passing through Cà Biricucci and Belvedere until it meets, shortly afterwards, the S. Donato-Tavernelle road, which it follows as far as Morocco; and then, via a virtual line passing through Figlinella, reaches Sambuca, where it meets the Pesa stream. Continuing to follow the course of the stream, it coincides for an initial stretch with the administrative boundary between the municipalities of S. Casciano Val di Pesa and Tavarnelle, before rejoining the stream after Ponte Rotto. From this point, the boundary of the area coincides with the administrative boundaries of the municipalities of San Casciano and Greve. Here we re-enter the province of Siena, and the boundary of the Chianti Classico area coincides with the administrative boundaries of the municipalities of Radda in Chianti and Gaiole, and for a short stretch with that of Castelnuovo Berardenga, until we reach the starting point of the description of this area.

Article 4 – Regulations governing viticulture

The environmental and growing conditions of the vineyards used for the production of “Chianti Classico” wine must be those traditionally found in the area and, in any case, must be such as to confer the specific quality characteristics on the grapes, the must and the resulting wine.

Planting distances, training systems and pruning methods must be such that they do not alter the distinctive characteristics of the grapes and the wine.
